drpjrwalsh: Plato believed that the most important stories are the ones we tell children. I support that theory. The best stories should inspire us to be better. And in the case of children's literature, that inspiration to self-reflect and improve is best coupled with humor, irony, and self-compassion. Children's literature should suggest morals and lessons but not preach. As "a spoonful of sugar makes the medicine goes down," so too does an appreciation of the absurd and an attitude of tolerance inspire readers to think and rethink their attitudes, decisions, and behavior. Bottom line, though, the story must engage before it can ever hope to inspire.
